Overview & Suitability
The 156 E River St Parking facility, officially known as River Street Parking Lot 3, is a municipal surface parking lot operated by the City of Savannah. Conveniently situated along Savannah's historic waterfront, this lot features approximately 50 non-restricted spaces. It is highly suitable for standard passenger vehicles, SUVs, and smaller trucks looking to explore the bustling River Street corridor. Due to its configuration as an open-air surface lot, it can easily accommodate taller vehicles; however, standard parking space dimensions apply, and the lot is not designed to accommodate oversized motorhomes or RVs.
Access, Dimensions & Clearance
As an open surface lot, River Street Parking Lot 3 offers an unobstructed vertical clearance of over 7 feet, making it an excellent choice for taller passenger vehicles that cannot fit into nearby parking garages. Access to the lot is via the historic Abercorn Ramp down to River Street. Drivers should be prepared for historic cobblestone streets, narrow ramps, and tight turns typical of Savannah’s historic waterfront. Navigating the ramp requires slow and careful driving, particularly during peak tourist hours when pedestrian traffic is high.
Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking
Parking rates are governed by the City of Savannah’s municipal parking guidelines. From Monday to Saturday, between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, parking is charged at $2.00 per hour. Parking is free from Monday to Saturday between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM, and free all day on Sundays. Payment can be made on-site at the multi-space pay station, which accepts coins, bills, and major credit cards like Visa and MasterCard. Alternatively, drivers can pay and manage sessions using the ParkSavannah mobile app. Please note that this lot operates on a first-come, first-served basis and does not support advance reservations. It may also close during special events without notice.
Security & Amenities
The lot is well-lit for evening use and is subject to routine patrols by the Savannah Police Department and City Parking Services. While there is no on-site parking attendant booth, the open layout offers good visibility from surrounding waterfront establishments, with plenty of nearby historic district amenities within easy walking distance.
Strategic Alternative
River Street Parking Lot 3 acts as a highly strategic parking base for exploring major historic attractions. It is situated steps away from the River Street Marketplace, the River Street Inn, and Emmet Park. For travelers looking to avoid higher private garage rates or hotel valet fees, this city-run lot serves as an exceptional budget-friendly alternative. It is also well-linked to the fare-free DOT shuttle, allowing visitors to park affordably and explore the broader Historic Landmark District without needing to drive.
