About this Location

Overview & Suitability

River Street Parking Lot 1 is a compact, unmanned open-air surface parking lot operated by the City of Savannah's Mobility & Parking Services. Situated at the foot of the historic Barnard Ramp directly across from the Dockside Restaurant, this lot contains 29 standard parking spaces. It is highly suitable for standard passenger vehicles, SUVs, and light trucks. Because of its limited size and location on the narrow, cobblestone-paved River Street, it is not recommended for larger RVs, campers, or motorhomes, which should instead utilize larger dedicated facilities like the MLK Savannah Visitor Center Lot.

Access, Dimensions & Clearance

As an open surface lot, there are no height clearance restrictions, making it accessible for taller standard vehicles. However, accessing the lot requires driving down the steep, historic cobblestone-paved Barnard Ramp from Bay Street, which can be bumpy and challenging for low-clearance sports cars. Navigating River Street itself is one-way from west to east. Drivers should expect tight turns and high pedestrian traffic along the historic waterfront. The lot may also close without notice during special events or parades.

Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking

Parking is paid on a pay-on-arrival basis, and reservations are not available. The rates and enforcement details include:

  • Hourly Rate: $2.00 per hour, enforced Monday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
  • Free Parking: Parking is free on Sundays and daily between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM.
  • Payment Methods: Payments can be made via the multi-space meter on-site, which accepts coins, bills, and major credit cards (Visa and MasterCard). Alternatively, drivers can pay digitally using the ParkSavannah mobile app.

Security & Amenities

This is an unmanned, self-service city lot. While it does not feature dedicated security guards, it benefits from municipal oversight, standard street lighting, and the constant high-density pedestrian presence of the Savannah Riverfront. Standard trash receptacles are located nearby, and a public outdoor elevator is available a short walk away to assist with climbing back up to Bay Street and Factor's Walk.

Strategic Alternative

This lot serves as a premier alternative to expensive hotel valets or crowded parking garages for visitors heading to top River Street attractions. It is ideal for dining at the Dockside Restaurant, shopping along the historic Factors Walk, or taking the free Savannah Belles Ferry across the river to Hutchinson Island and the Savannah Convention Center. Its direct proximity to the riverwalk makes it an unmatched convenient choice for quick daytime excursions.
