About this Location

Facility Overview

Carter Shields Cabin Parking is a dedicated roadside parking pullout situated along the historic Cades Cove Loop Road inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, near Townsend, Tennessee. Set against the serene backdrop of pastoral fields and rolling mountain ridges, this open-air surface area serves visitors exploring the Carter Shields Cabin, one of the best-preserved and most picturesque historic homesteads in the cove. Because this is an open-air pullout embedded directly alongside the scenic loop, there are no overhead clearance restrictions, making it suitable for standard passenger vehicles, compact SUVs, and full-size pickup trucks. However, due to the tight turns, narrow gravel shoulders, and high seasonal congestion of Cades Cove, drivers of long motorhomes, extended travel trailers, and oversized dual-axle vehicles should exercise caution when pulling in and out of the designated spaces.

Prime Location & Nearby Attractions

Located near the concluding stretch of the 11-mile one-way Cades Cove scenic drive, this parking area provides direct, step-out access to key park sights:

  • Carter Shields Cabin: Located just a few dozen yards across the meadow, this rustic 1880s log cabin was once home to Civil War veteran Carter Shields and offers an authentic glimpse into early Appalachian settlement life.
  • Cades Cove Wildlife Viewing: The surrounding open meadows and tree lines are prime viewing spots for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and black bears during early morning and dusk hours.
  • Cades Cove Nature Trail & Heritage Sites: Located further up the loop are historical landmarks including the Cable Mill Historic Area (approx. 3 miles back along the one-way route), the Primitive Baptist Church, and the Methodist Church.
  • Abrams Falls Trailhead: Situated approximately 4 miles earlier along the loop road, accessible prior to reaching the cabin.
  • Townsend Town Center: Approximately 15 to 20 miles north via Laurel Creek Road and Lamar Alexander Parkway, providing gateway dining, cabin rentals, and river tubing.

Access, Navigation & Transit Connectivity

Access to Carter Shields Cabin is strictly linear via the one-way Cades Cove Loop Road. Vehicles enter the loop off Laurel Creek Road from Townsend, TN, and must follow the scenic loop sequentially; there is no two-way driving or direct shortcut to enter or exit backwards. Egress continues forward along the final mile of the loop, which terminates directly back at Laurel Creek Road for convenient travel toward Townsend, Maryville, or Gatlinburg. There is no scheduled public transit or municipal shuttle service servicing Cades Cove. Mobile navigation should be downloaded prior to departure, as cellular service is virtually nonexistent within Cades Cove and the surrounding valley.

Visitor & Driver Tips

All vehicles parked within Great Smoky Mountains National Park for longer than 15 minutes require a valid \'Park It Forward\' parking tag displayed on the windshield. Daily tags cost $5.00 and weekly passes cost $15.00; these cannot be purchased on-site at this remote pullout and must be acquired ahead of time online via Recreation.gov, at the Cades Cove Visitor Center, or at the Townsend Visitor Center. Be mindful that Cades Cove Loop Road is completely closed to motor vehicle traffic every Wednesday between early May and late September to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. Plan for heavy loop traffic during peak autumn foliage and summer afternoons, and always maintain at least 50 yards of distance from wildlife.
