Facility Overview
The Compton Gap Parking Lot is a dedicated trailhead parking area situated at approximately Mile 10.4 along the scenic Skyline Drive in the North District of Shenandoah National Park, near Huntly and Front Royal, Virginia. Positioned at an elevation of roughly 2,415 feet, this open-air asphalt surface lot provides direct access to some of the northern Blue Ridge Mountains\' most celebrated trail systems. Because it is a surface-level, outdoor mountain lot, there are no overhead clearance barriers, making it readily accessible for standard passenger sedans, crossovers, full-size SUVs, pickup trucks, and camper vans. However, due to designated space dimensions and typical turnout curves along Skyline Drive, oversized motorhomes and extended travel trailers may find turning and parking challenging during peak visitation windows.
Prime Location & Nearby Attractions
Compton Gap serves as a major recreational gateway for day hikers, section hikers, and nature lovers exploring Shenandoah National Park. Notable nearby destinations and trail connections include:
- Compton Peak Trail & Columnar Basalt Formations: Directly accessible from the parking area via the Appalachian Trail. A moderate 2.4-mile round-trip hike leads to scenic viewpoints to the east and remarkable ancient columnar jointing basalt rock formations to the west.
- Appalachian National Scenic Trail (AT): The white-blazed AT crosses directly through Compton Gap, allowing southbound and northbound hikers seamless ridge access.
- Dickey Ridge Trail: Connecting trailheads nearby provide extensive circuit hiking options through hardwood forests.
- Dickey Ridge Visitor Center (Mile 4.6): Located approximately 5.8 miles north along Skyline Drive, offering park exhibits, orientation films, maps, ranger programs, and clean restrooms.
- Front Royal Entrance Station: Approximately 10.4 miles north, connecting visitors directly to the historic town of Front Royal for dining, craft breweries, provisions, and lodging.
Access, Navigation & Transit Connectivity
Vehicular access to Compton Gap Parking Lot is via Skyline Drive at Milepost 10.4. Drivers entering from the north will pass through the Front Royal Entrance Station off US Route 340, navigating a winding, 35-mph mountain scenic byway. Drivers arriving from the south can access Skyline Drive via the Thornton Gap Entrance Station at US Route 211 (Mile 31.5) and drive north. There is no public rail or urban bus transit service operating directly to Compton Gap; access requires a private automobile, motorcycle, bicycle, or pre-arranged private shuttle service popular among Appalachian Trail backpackers. Visitor & Driver Tips
While parking at Compton Gap is free of charge, all visitors must possess a valid Shenandoah National Park entrance permit or an America the Beautiful Interagency Pass to travel on Skyline Drive. The lot has limited vehicle capacity (roughly 10 to 15 designated spaces) and frequently fills up early in the day on pleasant weekend mornings, especially during peak fall foliage in October. Arrive before 9:00 AM or after 3:00 PM for the highest likelihood of finding an open stall. Cell service can be intermittent in this mountain gap; downloading offline maps via GPS apps before departure is strongly recommended. Keep in mind that Skyline Drive may temporarily close during winter months due to ice and snow conditions.
