About this Location

Facility Overview

Forge Creek Parking is an open-air trailhead and scenic pull-off parking area situated along Forge Creek Road in the southwestern section of Cades Cove within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Townsend, TN 37882). Nestled in one of the most visited and picturesque national park valleys in the United States, this ground-level gravel and paved lot caters to day hikers, backcountry adventurers, wildlife photographers, and scenic motorists exploring the historic Cades Cove basin. Because it is an open-air outdoor surface lot with no overhead barriers, there are no vertical clearance restrictions, making it suitable for standard passenger sedans, pickup trucks, SUVs, and camper vans. However, due to narrow turning areas and limited overall capacity, oversized RVs and long trailers may find maneuvering challenging, particularly during peak visitation periods.

Prime Location & Nearby Attractions

The parking area serves as an essential jumping-off point for exploring both historic structures and rugged wilderness trails within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park:

  • Cades Cove Cable Mill Historic Area: Located less than a half-mile away, featuring a working historic grist mill, blacksmith shop, smokehouse, and visitor center.
  • Gregory Ridge Trail & Gregory Bald: One of the most celebrated high-elevation backcountry hikes in the park, famous for flame azaleas in June and panoramic vistas across the Smokies.
  • Parsons Branch Road: A historic, rugged one-way primitive road heading toward US-129 (The Tail of the Dragon), accessible right past the Forge Creek area when open seasonally.
  • Cades Cove Loop Road Wildlife Viewing: Renowned for frequent sightings of white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkeys, and coyotes in the surrounding meadows and forests.
  • Forge Creek: A pristine mountain stream paralleling the roadway, offering serene waterside spots for fly fishing and photography.

Access, Navigation & Transit Connectivity

Vehicle access to Forge Creek Parking is via the scenic 11-mile, one-way Cades Cove Loop Road. Drivers enter the loop near the Cades Cove Campground and drive roughly halfway around the valley before turning onto Forge Creek Road near the Cable Mill Visitor Center. Exiting requires continuing along the remainder of the one-way loop back toward Laurel Creek Road and Townsend, Tennessee. There is no public transit or rideshare service within this remote national park corridor, so private vehicle, bicycle, or pre-arranged private shuttle is necessary. Motorists should note that Laurel Creek Road connects Cades Cove to Townsend (approx. 30 minutes away) and onwards to Maryville and Gatlinburg.

Visitor & Driver Tips

  • Park It Forward Parking Tags: A valid Great Smoky Mountains National Park parking tag is mandatory for all vehicles parking longer than 15 minutes. Purchase your daily or weekly tag online via Recreation.gov or at visitor center kiosks before arrival, as mobile cellular service in Cades Cove is virtually nonexistent.
  • Vehicle-Free Days: Cades Cove Loop Road is completely closed to motor vehicle traffic all day every Wednesday from early May through late September to allow pedestrians and cyclists exclusive access.
  • Early Arrival: The parking area fills up quickly during peak seasons (summer and October fall foliage). Plan to enter the loop road at sunrise to beat heavy traffic backups.
  • Fuel & Provisions: Ensure your fuel tank is full and pack plenty of water and snacks, as fuel and extensive concessions are not available inside the cove.
