The Hidden Valley Climber Parking Lot is a dedicated, open-air gravel surface lot nestled on the forested slopes of Brumley Mountain along Hidden Valley Road (State Route 690) in Washington County, near Abingdon, Virginia. Developed by the Carolina Climbers Coalition (CCC) in partnership with the Access Fund, the lot was constructed to provide direct, sustainable, and authorized trail access to the premier sandstone crags of the Hidden Valley climbing area. Spanning high along the mountain ridge at nearly 3,600 feet in elevation, this rural wilderness lot offers open-sky parking without any vertical overhead clearance restrictions, making it easily accommodating for high-roof camper vans, overland trucks, 4x4 SUVs, roof-rack-equipped crossovers, and standard passenger cars.

The unpaved crushed-stone footprint is unstriped, requiring visitors to park thoughtfully perpendicular to the forest perimeter to preserve turnaround room and maximize vehicular capacity. Because it sits on private CCC conservation land adjacent to the expansive Hidden Valley Wildlife Management Area (WMA), this designated lot relieves congestion on mountain switchbacks and protects local access agreements with surrounding landowners.

Positioned just 10 to 12 miles north of historic downtown Abingdon, this trailhead lot is the primary gateway to world-class outdoor recreation in Southwest Virginia:

• Hidden Valley Crags (Right Side and Left Side Cliffs): Directly accessible via trailheads originating at the lot and across Hidden Valley Road. Climbers can reach nearly 500 sport and traditional sandstone climbing routes within a 10- to 25-minute hike.
• Hidden Valley Lake & Recreation Area: Located less than 1.5 miles farther up the road, this pristine 60-acre high-elevation lake offers freshwater fishing for walleye, northern pike, and bass, as well as canoe and kayak paddling.
• Brumley Mountain Trail & The Great Channels: Connecting directly near the lot, the rugged Brumley Mountain Trail winds along mountain crests and scenic overlooks, eventually joining the system leading toward the famous sandstone labyrinth of the Channels State Forest.
• Historic Downtown Abingdon (approx. 20-minute drive): A scenic drive down the mountain leads to the Barter Theatre (the State Theatre of Virginia), the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center & Marketplace, craft breweries, and the western terminus of the world-famous Virginia Creeper National Recreation Trail.

Access, Navigation & Transit Connectivity

Reaching the lot requires navigating scenic mountain infrastructure. Drivers travel along U.S. Route 19 between Abingdon and Lebanon, turning onto State Route 690 (Hidden Valley Road). The route winds up Brumley Mountain through several steep, paved switchbacks before reaching the gravel lot situated on the right side of the road, roughly 400 feet below the state-managed Low Gap lot. Egress requires care due to limited sightlines on mountain curves and occasional encounters with descending recreationists or wildlife.

Due to its remote mountain location within the Clinch Mountain range, there is no public transit, bus, or rail service connecting to the trailhead. Interstates and regional transit hubs are accessed by car, with Interstate 81 (Exits 14 and 19) situated roughly 12 to 14 miles south in Abingdon. A four-wheel-drive or high-clearance vehicle is recommended during late autumn, winter, and early spring when gravel roads can become muddy, snow-covered, or icy.

Visitor & Driver Tips

• Strict No-Dogs Policy: To honor delicate access agreements with adjoining rural property owners and minimize conflicts with hunting hounds and local wildlife, pets are strictly prohibited at the Hidden Valley climbing crags. Please leave dogs at home.
• Park to Maximize Space: Space can become tight on crisp autumn and spring weekends. Back in or pull in straight toward the tree line rather than parking parallel so fellow outdoors enthusiasts have room to park and maneuver.
• Observe Seasonal Regulations: While the CCC climbing lot is open year-round, the state-run Low Gap lot further uphill has seasonal climber restrictions during active hunting seasons (October through early January). The CCC lot remains the designated, preferred parking zone.
• Check Connectivity & Fuel Up in Abingdon: Cellular data coverage can be intermittent along the mountain ridges. Download offline maps and climbing topos before leaving US-19, and ensure you have adequate fuel before ascending State Route 690.
• Pack It In, Pack It Out: There is no municipal trash collection at the trailhead. Carry out all tape, chalk wrappers, food waste, and gear to keep this ecologically sensitive mountain habitat clean and accessible.
