Overview & Suitability
The interpretive sites located along Forest Road 99 within the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument provide essential day-use access to the monument's eastern volcanic landscapes, including views of Spirit Lake and historical eruption sites. These facilities are primarily designed for standard passenger vehicles. Please note that overnight camping is strictly prohibited at these interpretive sites and along the corridor of Forest Road 99.
Access, Dimensions & Clearance
Access to these sites is via Forest Road 99, which serves as a seasonal gateway to the monument. Visitors should be aware of the following navigation notes:
- Road Conditions: The route is paved but can be rough and narrow in several sections; driving with caution is advised.
- Vehicle Recommendations: Large recreational vehicles (RVs) and trailers are generally not recommended due to narrow passages and limited turnaround space at individual interpretive trailheads.
- Availability: Parking is often limited at specific sites (such as the Independence Pass area, which accommodates approximately 6 vehicles), so early arrival is encouraged during peak summer months.
Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking
Most recreation sites in this area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest operate as fee sites:
- Standard Day Use Fee: $5.00 per vehicle per day.
- Accepted Passes: Northwest Forest Pass, Interagency Recreation Passes (America the Beautiful), and Digital Day Passes are honored.
- Payment Methods: Sites utilize self-service pay stations; it is recommended to bring exact cash or a check. Visitors are also encouraged to download the recreation.gov app in advance for mobile 'Scan & Pay' options where available.
Security & Amenities
These locations are remote, natural interpretive sites with minimal infrastructure. Amenities are basic and vary by location:
- Security: There are no dedicated security personnel or CCTV systems at these isolated forest sites.
- Restrooms/Water: Most sites do not offer restrooms or potable water; visitors should plan to be self-sufficient and practice 'Leave No Trace' principles.
- Accessibility: Facilities are limited; please check specific site signage for current status, as road and facility access is highly dependent on seasonal snow conditions (typically open July through October).
Strategic Alternative
While the west side of the monument (State Route 504) serves as the primary visitor corridor, the Forest Road 99 corridor acts as the essential strategic alternative for accessing the east side of Mount St. Helens. It is the primary route for visitors looking to reach Windy Ridge, the Mount Margaret Backcountry, and various interpretive viewpoints when west-side roads are congested or undergoing maintenance.
