Facility Overview
Lake Rose Trailhead Parking is the premier and most heavily visited parking area within the sprawling Ricketts Glen State Park, situated near Benton in northeastern Pennsylvania. This large, paved, open-air surface lot sits directly atop the plateau near the historic site of Lake Rose, serving as the northern staging hub for the park\'s world-famous waterfall trails. Because it is an outdoor surface lot surrounded by mature forest, there are no overhead clearance restrictions, allowing standard sedans, compact crossovers, large SUVs, pickup trucks, and high-roof recreation vans to park comfortably. Dedicated pull-through or oversized parking spaces are limited, making standard passenger vehicles and light trucks the optimal fit. Like all public day-use areas in Pennsylvania state parks, parking here is completely free year-round.
Prime Location & Nearby Attractions
Situated in the heart of Ricketts Glen State Park, the Lake Rose Trailhead provides instantaneous foot access to some of the most dramatic natural scenery in the mid-Atlantic region:
- Falls Trail Network: Steps away from the parking lot, visitors can enter the Falls Trail loop to view many of the park\'s 21 named, free-flowing waterfalls, including the towering 94-foot Ganoga Falls located less than a half-mile descent down Ganoga Glen.
- Highland Trail & Midway Crevasse: A brief 5- to 10-minute walk links hikers directly to the Highland Trail and the dramatic rock formations of the Midway Crevasse.
- Lake Jean Beach & Recreation Area: Located just a 3-minute drive (approx. 1.2 miles) south along PA-487, featuring a sandy public swimming beach, kayak and canoe rentals, picnic pavilions, and boat launches.
- Ricketts Glen Campgrounds: The park\'s main modern tent and trailer camping loops and rental cabins are situated roughly 5 minutes away on the western and southern shores of Lake Jean.
- Benton and Red Rock: The charming rural communities of Red Rock and Benton lie 10 to 15 minutes down the mountain along PA-487, offering local diners, country stores, and gas stations.
Access, Navigation & Transit Connectivity
Access to the Lake Rose Trailhead is straightforward via Pennsylvania Route 487 (PA-487). From PA-487, drivers turn onto the paved park access road (Lake Rose Road) following clearly marked state park signage directing traffic toward the Falls Trail and Lake Rose. The approach winds gently through hardwood forest into a wide, looped parking court designed for orderly one-way vehicular circulation. Due to the park\'s secluded wilderness setting on North Mountain, there is no fixed-route municipal public transit or rail service; all guests arrive by personal automobile, motorcycle, or bicycle. Major regional travel corridors connecting to PA-487 include Interstate 80 to the south (via Bloomsburg) and US Route 118 at the base of the mountain.

Visitor & Driver Tips
Because Lake Rose is the most popular starting point for the Falls Trail, the lot fills to maximum capacity very early on fair-weather weekends and peak autumn foliage days, frequently by 9:30 AM or 10:00 AM. Arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon is strongly advised. If the Lake Rose lot is full, rangers will direct drivers to alternative parking areas, such as the Route 118 Trailhead (Evergreen Parking) or the Lake Jean beach lots. Note that cellular service is extremely limited or non-existent in Ricketts Glen; download offline navigation maps and trail routes before ascending the mountain. During winter months, park roads and trails may experience heavy snow and ice, with trail access restricted to properly equipped hikers wearing crampons and ice axes.
