Overview & Suitability
The Pigeon Hill Parking Lot is a dedicated surface parking facility serving Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, located at the intersection of Old Mountain Road NW and Burnt Hickory Road NW. Providing direct access to the scenic Pigeon Hill Trail and Little Kennesaw Mountain paths, this lot features 68 standard parking spaces, including 4 designated ADA-accessible spots. It is ideally suited for standard passenger cars, SUVs, and light trucks. Because of its limited capacity and standard parking bay dimensions, this lot is not suitable for RVs, motorhomes, or vehicles towing trailers (a dedicated horse trailer lot is available elsewhere within the park).
Access, Dimensions & Clearance
This open-air surface lot has no overhead height clearance restrictions, making it accessible to taller passenger vans and standard-sized utility vehicles. Access to the lot is straightforward via Burnt Hickory Road NW, though drivers should exercise caution during peak hours as hikers and trail runners frequently cross the surrounding roadways. While navigation is easy for standard vehicles, the parking bays are narrow and space to maneuver extremely large vehicles is limited.
Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking
Parking at the Pigeon Hill lot requires a park pass. The following rate structure applies:
- Daily Pass: $5.00 per vehicle.
- Annual Park Pass: $40.00 (valid for Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park).
- Interagency Passes: America the Beautiful and other federal senior/military passes are fully accepted.
Payment can be made at the automated, card-only fee machines located on-site, or online in advance through Recreation.gov. Cash is not accepted at this location. Physical passes must be clearly displayed on the vehicle's dashboard or hung from the rearview mirror with the expiration date visible. Please note that paying the fee does not guarantee a parking space, and spots are first-come, first-served.
Security & Amenities
The parking lot is regularly patrolled by National Park Service rangers to ensure compliance and visitor safety. In terms of amenities, the lot is equipped with a public drinking water fountain located near the trailhead. However, there are no permanent restroom facilities directly at this parking lot (the nearest public restrooms and visitor assistance are located at the main Visitor Center and Cheatham Hill parking areas).
Strategic Alternative
The Pigeon Hill Parking Lot serves as an excellent strategic alternative to the main Kennesaw Mountain Visitor Center parking lots, which are highly congested and often reach full capacity early in the morning on weekends. By parking at Pigeon Hill, visitors can enjoy immediate access to some of the park's most popular, wooded, and historic hiking routes, bypassing the heavier crowds at the main entrance.
