Overview & Suitability
The Town Center Park-and-Ride (also officially designated as the Kennesaw State University "Black Lot" on gamedays) is a premier surface parking facility located at 634 Big Shanty Rd NW in Kennesaw, GA. Primarily designed as a commuter-focused park-and-ride lot, the facility is highly suitable for daily transit passengers, local commuters, and university event attendees. Standard passenger vehicles, including sedans, SUVs, and standard light trucks, can park here. While the lot is tailored to daily commuters and event-goers, specialized overnight camping or heavy-duty RV parking is generally restricted to dedicated athletic lots (such as the adjacent Grey Lot/KSU Center) during specific university events.
Access, Dimensions & Clearance
As an outdoor surface lot, there are no vertical height clearance limits, making it accessible for larger standard passenger vehicles and commuter vans. The facility is easily navigated via a well-designed entrance directly on Big Shanty Road NW. Commuters should note that the entrance is strictly on Big Shanty Road and is separate from the adjacent Busbee Park-and-Ride, which is accessed via George Busbee Drive. The lot features wide driving lanes, clear directional signage, and ample turning radiuses for straightforward navigation.
Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking
For daily commuter transit riders taking regional bus services like Xpress Route 484 to Midtown Atlanta or CobbLinc local routes, parking is completely FREE on a first-come, first-served basis with no pre-booking required. However, the pricing structure changes on Kennesaw State University (KSU) football gamedays when the lot transforms into the "Black Lot":
- Commuter Transit Parking: Free (Monday - Friday)
- Gameday General Parking (Black Lot): $25 (prepaid online) or $25 on-site (card-only, subject to availability)
- Gameday Tailgate Area Reservation: $60 (includes reserved parking spot and tent space, must be booked online 48 hours in advance)
Commuter transit fares are managed separately via Breeze Cards, mobile transit apps, or exact change cash on board the buses.
Security & Amenities
The facility is fully paved, fenced, and features extensive evening lighting to ensure passenger safety. Because of its proximity to the Kennesaw State University campus, the lot is regularly patrolled by KSU Police and Cobb County authorities. On-site conveniences include standard bus waiting shelters, trash receptacles, designated ADA-accessible parking stalls, and specialized glass and cardboard recycling drop-off bins managed by Kennesaw State University.
Strategic Alternative
This location represents an outstanding strategic alternative to driving directly into the notoriously congested traffic of Atlanta. By parking here, commuters can seamlessly board the Xpress Route 484 or CobbLinc buses to bypass peak-hour congestion on the I-75 Northwest Corridor Express Lanes. Additionally, the lot is highly coveted on weekends during the autumn season, acting as the primary hub ("Black Lot") for fans attending football games and athletic events at Fifth Third Stadium, which is located just a short walk away.
