Overview & Suitability
The SCAD Hive Car Park (also known as The Hive Parking Garage) is a multi-level parking facility primarily serving the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) student community, specifically residents of The Hive housing complex. It is a private, university-controlled parking deck rather than a general public lot. Standard passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, and light trucks) driven by SCAD students, staff, and authorized overnight guests are the primary occupants. Free parking is available for registered students who obtain and display an active SCAD parking decal on their windshield. Standard public or hourly parking for non-affiliated visitors is highly restricted, making this facility unsuitable for casual city tourists or RV/campground parking.
Access, Dimensions & Clearance
The parking garage features modern construction with a ramp-based multi-story design, offering straightforward navigation for standard passenger vehicles. Large RVs, motorhomes, and oversized trucks are not recommended due to standard indoor parking garage ceiling clearance limitations typical of multi-level structures. Clear signage and designated entry/exit gates control traffic flow, which can become congested during peak class commute times and move-in/move-out weeks.
Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking
- Permit Holders (Students/Staff): Parking is free, but requires registering the vehicle and displaying a valid, current-year SCAD parking decal on the vehicle's dashboard or windshield.
- Overnight Guests: Registered students can request a free overnight guest parking pass through the MySCAD portal to allow visitor vehicles to park legally within the deck.
- Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging: The deck is equipped with Blink EV charging stations. Charging fees apply: $0.85 per hour for the first four hours, and $2.00 per hour thereafter.
- Public Parking: No direct hourly, daily, or monthly public booking is available. Unauthorized vehicles parked in the garage without a valid SCAD permit are subject to ticketing, fines, and towing.
Security & Amenities
As a student residential parking facility, security is a high priority. The garage is monitored and patrolled by SCAD University Safety and Security. Amenities include:
- 24/7 video surveillance (CCTV) monitoring.
- Bright, modern LED lighting throughout all decks and stairwells.
- Blink EV charging stations for electric vehicles.
- Proximity to SCAD's Bee Line transit system, allowing students to securely leave their cars and utilize free shuttle buses to various academic buildings.
Strategic Alternative
For those attending events at the nearby SCAD Museum of Art, the SCAD Museum theater, or visiting student housing facilities like Turner House and Barnard Village, the Hive Car Park serves as the ultimate hub for SCAD-affiliated visitors. Non-affiliated drivers looking for downtown Savannah parking should look to public city-operated meters or nearby municipal parking garages, as parking here without a SCAD permit carries a heavy risk of local parking citations.
