Overview & Suitability
The SCAD UX Parking Lot is a private, university-owned surface parking facility operated by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). This location is specifically designed to accommodate standard passenger cars, SUVs, and light trucks. It serves as dedicated parking for students, faculty, and staff attending user experience (UX) design classes, workshops, and immersive projects at the nearby Shed (3515 Montgomery St) and the Gulfstream Center for Design (3116 Montgomery St). Please note that this is a restricted institutional lot and does not support public parking, overnight RV camping, or commercial vehicle storage.
Access, Dimensions & Clearance
As an open-air surface lot, the SCAD UX Parking Lot has no overhead clearance limitations, making it accessible to taller consumer vehicles. The entrance is situated on Orchard Street, near Montgomery Street and the neighboring Family Dollar. Drivers accessing the lot should remain alert when crossing the adjacent railroad tracks and navigating the surrounding residential streets. The lot features standard stall dimensions and straightforward lane configurations, allowing for easy navigation and parking maneuvers.
Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking
Parking is free of charge for registered SCAD students, faculty, and staff, provided they have registered their vehicle and obtained a free parking permit/decal via the MySCAD portal.
- Permit Requirement: A physical SCAD parking decal must be clearly displayed on the vehicle's dashboard. Unregistered vehicles or those without a visible decal risk being ticketed by campus security.
- Visitor Access: Non-affiliated general public parking is strictly prohibited. Authorized guests and visitors must obtain a temporary visitor pass in advance through SCAD's Department of University Safety or the inviting academic department.
Security & Amenities
To ensure vehicle safety, the lot is equipped with several active security measures maintained by the university:
- 24/7 Patrols: Regularly patrolled by uniformed SCAD University Safety officers.
- Surveillance: Monitored continuously by the university's comprehensively integrated CCTV camera network.
- Lighting: The perimeter is well-lit for safe nighttime access and departures.
Strategic Alternative
Due to the limited parking spaces directly adjacent to major campus buildings like Montgomery Hall and the Gulfstream Center for Design, this auxiliary UX lot acts as an exceptional strategic alternative. Located just a short 4-minute walk across the tracks, it offers a reliable and less congested parking solution for students and staff traveling between southern campus facilities during peak class times.
