About this Location

Facility Overview

The Stormy Mountain Trailhead and carpark is an open-air, natural-surface parking staging area located in the rugged high country of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Chelan County, Washington. Perched at an elevation of roughly 6,130 feet along the scenic ridgeline between the Entiat River Valley and Lake Chelan, this wilderness lot directly serves hikers, runners, and mountain recreationists venturing along Devils Backbone Trail #1448 and Stormy Mountain Trail #1233. The lot consists of an unpaved, compact dirt-and-gravel turnaround apron situated off Forest Road 8410 (Slide Ridge Road).

Because the car park is completely open to the sky, there are no vertical clearance barriers or height restrictions, allowing lifted overland rigs, camper-converted high-roof vans, trucks with bed campers, and roof-rack accessories to enter without issue. However, horizontal layout and approach road conditions dictate vehicle suitability: the long, unpaved ascent over Forest Service logging roads is steep, washboarded, and rocky. High-clearance vehicles, crossover SUVs with all-wheel drive, and 4x4 trucks are strongly recommended. Standard low-clearance passenger sedans may struggle with bottoming out on rocky drainage dips. Due to tight switchbacks, steep single-lane shelf drops, and limited turnaround space at the trailhead, large motorhomes, fifth wheels, and long travel trailers are not suitable for this car park.

Prime Location & Nearby Attractions

While remote from urban centers, sports stadiums, and commercial shopping centers, the Stormy Mountain car park occupies an enviable tactical location for outdoor enthusiasts and alpine sightseers exploring North Central Washington:

  • Stormy Mountain Summit (Trail #1233): Beginning immediately from the parking area, this 1.5-mile trail (3.0 miles round-trip) climbs to the former fire lookout site at nearly 7,200 feet elevation, yielding breathtaking 360-degree panoramas of Lake Chelan, the Entiat Mountains, the Stuart Range, and Glacier Peak.
  • Devils Backbone Trail #1448: Directly connected at the trailhead, this iconic multi-use ridgeline trail offers miles of undulating high-elevation terrain beloved by backcountry runners, endurance mountain bikers, and dirt bike riders.
  • Subalpine Larch Viewing: In early-to-mid October, the northern cirques and slopes immediately visible from the trail display vibrant golden larches, making this a favored autumn photography hub.
  • Lake Chelan & Twenty-Five Mile Creek State Park: Located approximately 20 miles down the mountain via Slide Ridge and Shady Pass roads, offering lakeside camping, boat launches, and marina services.
  • Entiat River Valley & Ardenvoir: Accessible down Forest Road 5380 and the Entiat River Road, offering peaceful riverfront recreation and access to wilderness trail systems.

Access, Navigation & Transit Connectivity

Reaching the Stormy Mountain parking area requires navigating seasonal gravel mountain roads managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Drivers typically approach via one of two routes:

  • Via Chelan / South Lakeshore Road: From downtown Chelan, travel south on WA-97A for 3 miles, turn onto South Lakeshore Road along Lake Chelan for approximately 20 miles, turn onto Shady Pass Road (Forest Road 5900) for 3 miles, and turn onto Slide Ridge Road (Forest Road 8410), ascending roughly 16 miles past Windy Saddle to the parking turnaround.
  • Via Entiat River Road: From the town of Entiat, follow Entiat River Road (Forest Road 5100) upstream toward Ardenvoir, connecting to Forest Road 5380 and climbing up to junction with Forest Road 8410.

These roads are single-lane in many sections with pullouts for oncoming traffic; drivers must maintain modest speeds and yield to uphill traffic. Because the facility sits deep within public backcountry forestlands, there is no public transit, bus service, or passenger rail connectivity; personal four-wheel or all-wheel drive transportation is essential. The nearest regional thoroughfare is U.S. Highway 97A running through the Columbia River corridor below.

Visitor & Driver Tips

  • Check Seasonal Accessibility: Forest Road 8410 is unmaintained in winter and typically blocked by deep snowdrifts from November through mid-June or early July. Always contact the Chelan Ranger District before heading out to verify road status.
  • Vehicle Suitability & Tires: Ensure your vehicle has good ground clearance and sturdy, well-treaded tires. Slide Ridge Road features loose shale and embedded sharp rocks; carry a properly inflated full-size spare tire and basic emergency gear.
  • Download Offline Maps: Cellular coverage from all major carriers is unavailable along the logging roads and in the parking lot. Pre-load offline GPS navigation and topo trail maps before leaving Chelan or Entiat.
  • Pack Out All Waste & Bring Water: Because there are no municipal services, water spigots, or restrooms at the trailhead, carry all the water you and your pets need, and pack out every piece of trash.
  • Dress for Rapid Weather Shifts: Situated above 6,100 feet, conditions at the car park can change rapidly from scorching valley heat to sub-freezing winds and sudden mountain squalls.
