Overview & Suitability
The Arrowhead Trails Parking facility serves as the primary trailhead for the Arrowhead stacked-loop trail system within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. This facility is a dedicated outdoor gravel lot designed primarily for hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners. Please note that this is a rustic trailhead parking area, not a commercial garage or RV park; while standard passenger vehicles are well-accommodated, it is not equipped for large motorhome or oversized trailer storage.
Access, Dimensions & Clearance
Access to the parking area is via Kaymoor No. 1 Road. The route involves traveling along Gatewood Road before turning onto the access road. The final approach features a T-intersection, with the trailhead parking located shortly thereafter. Visitors should expect rural road conditions; while generally accessible for most passenger vehicles, heavy rain or winter weather can occasionally affect the surface quality of the dirt/gravel access road.
Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking
Parking at the Arrowhead Trails trailhead is currently provided free of charge. There is no requirement for pre-booking or digital payment, as it operates as a public-access facility managed under the oversight of the National Park Service.
Security & Amenities
As a remote trailhead location, the facility is relatively self-contained and offers minimal amenities. Security is limited to standard park-monitored signage and passive surveillance. Visitors should ensure all valuables are secured out of sight. Restrooms and additional services are not available directly on-site, though full-service options, including bike shops and food, are located nearby at the Arrowhead Bike Farm.
Strategic Alternative
This location serves as the essential gateway for those wishing to explore the New River Gorge trail network. If the primary trailhead reaches capacity, overflow parking is typically directed toward the nearby Kaymoor Top trailhead. It is an ideal starting point for a day trip focused on world-class mountain biking or hiking the gorge’s historic coal mining sites.
