Overview & Suitability
The Kaymoor Parking lot serves as the primary access point for the historic Kaymoor Miners Trail within the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. This facility is a rugged, gravel-surfaced trailhead lot designed primarily for passenger vehicles and standard hikers. It is important to note that the lot is characterized by a small, narrow footprint, which may present significant challenges for larger vehicles, RVs, and those towing trailers.
Access, Dimensions & Clearance
Located off Kaymoor Road in the Canyon Rim area, the lot is accessible via local mountain roads. Given the natural terrain and modest size of the parking area, there is no high-clearance infrastructure, but drivers of oversized vehicles should exercise extreme caution as maneuvering room is limited. It is recommended that visitors arrive early during peak seasons, as space is strictly limited and overflow parking is not readily available.
Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking
Parking at the Kaymoor trailhead is operated by the National Park Service. It is currently free of charge to all visitors, and there is no reservation or pre-booking system in place. Parking operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Security & Amenities
As a remote National Park trailhead facility, this lot offers basic amenities intended for hikers rather than high-security infrastructure. Features include:
- Vault-style toilets conveniently located near the trailhead.
- Direct trail access to the Kaymoor Miners Trail and its famous 821-step descent to the coal processing plant.
- Minimal lighting; visitors are advised to plan trips during daylight hours.
Strategic Alternatives
If the Kaymoor lot is full, visitors can explore the Cunard River Access road for alternative trailheads or utilize nearby parking areas such as the Fayette Station road access points. Combining visits with the Long Point trail or the wider New River Gorge trail network remains a popular strategy for those seeking a full day of exploration.
