Overview & Suitability
The Tybee Pier / South Beach 14th Street Parking Lot (commonly known as Tybee Beach Public Car Park) is one of the premier beachside parking options on Tybee Island. Positioned directly off 14th Street, this spacious open-air lot offers immediate, convenient access to the ocean. The facility is strictly designed for standard-sized passenger cars and SUVs. Visitors should note that recreational vehicles (RVs), motorhomes, and campers are strictly prohibited from parking here at any time. Furthermore, bus parking is disallowed year-round, making this lot exclusive to standard consumer transport.
Access, Dimensions & Clearance
Because this is a spacious surface lot, there are no overhead height limits or clearance restrictions, which accommodates taller standard vehicles, SUVs, and cars equipped with roof cargo boxes. Entering and exiting the lot is easy via 14th Street. However, because of its prime beachside location, traffic can become highly congested during peak summer weekends, and motorists are advised to exercise caution. The lot is fully paved with clearly delineated bays, though drivers are highly encouraged to arrive early in the morning during holidays and hot summer days to secure a spot.
Parking Rates, Tariffs & Booking
Tybee Island operates on an island-wide "Pay to Park" system. Enforcement is active 365 days a year from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, including holidays and weekends. The standard tariffs are as follows:
- Hourly Parking: $4.00 per hour during peak months. An off-season rate of $2.00 per hour applies from November 1 through February 28.
- Daily Pass: $25.00 per day, with the option to purchase up to 7 consecutive days for a total of $175.00.
Please note that physical payment kiosks no longer accept cash or coins. Drivers must pay using a credit card at the on-site kiosks or complete their transaction via the Park TYB mobile app (using Zone 2100). If paying via the kiosk, you must display your printed receipt clearly face-up on your dashboard. While individual spaces cannot be reserved, Day Passes can be purchased in advance via the city's online payment portal.
Security & Amenities
While the lot is public and un-gated, it features robust overhead night lighting and benefits from frequent routine patrols by local parking enforcement and Tybee Island police. Direct dune-crossover boardwalks connect the parking lot straight to the beach, featuring specialized mats for handicap accessibility. Public restrooms, outdoor showers, and trash receptacles are positioned at the entrance for added convenience.
Strategic Alternative
As the primary South Beach beachfront lot, this location serves as the best alternative to scarce street-side metered spaces along the nearby Business Corridor and Tybrisa Street. It acts as an ideal parking base for visitors aiming to enjoy the Walter Parker Pier and Pavilion, local beachside restaurants, and nearby shops without having to navigate deeper residential island streets.
